At the NY Times, this often overlooked part of the daily newspaper is transformed into great journalism, full of humor and passion, offering a glimpse into the front lines of history, before the freshly inked pages have fully dried. Vanessa Gould’s unexpectedly fascinating “Obit” is the first documentary to look into the unknown world of editorial obituaries, going beyond the byline and into the minds of those chronicling life after death, while inviting some of the most essential questions we ask ourselves about life, memory and the inevitable passage of time. What are the things we choose to remember? What lingers on, refusing to die? (more)

Thursday 21/03 at 22:00 @ Exile Room

Director: Cameron Yates | Country: USA | Duration: 83’

At 10 years old, Flynn McGarry was already an accomplished nouvelle cuisine chef, opening a supper club in the living room of his California home, where he served a seasonal foraged tasting menu to wide-eyed Los Angelenos, while his classmates acted as line cooks. Luckily, his filmmaker mother documented every moment. With sudden fame, Flynn outgrows his bedroom kitchen and mother’s camera, and sets out to challenge the hierarchy of the culinary world, causing a flurry of reactions on social media. Cameron Yates’ documentary is a delicious portrait of a rising star that’s sure to activate your taste buds, as well as a reflection on motherhood and what it means to give up one’s own identity in furtherance of a child’s passion.
